Plantation Shutter Color Choices

Bright colored shutters on the outside of a home are a fairly common sight. A homeowner with truly unique style, however, may choose to add color to their indoor window treatments as well. Bright white shutters are classic and elegant, of course. But in certain spaces you may find a pure white to look glaring or even infantile. Dark colored plantation shutters add an air of sophistication to any space and other alternate colors can bring a lot of pizazz to your place. They can also absorb sunlight more than white. Here are a few of the most popular plantation shutter colors (other than white) that we have available… Black Indoor window shutters in a black finish can make a dramatic statement. They’re well suited for spaces you want kept a bit darker like basements, TV rooms and “man caves.” With the right wall color, a light color for contrast, they can even work well in bedrooms and dining rooms. Black plantations shutters in a bathroom can provide some extra privacy. Pairing them with black and white décor certainly makes for a strong impact. Wood Stains After white, the most popular plantation shutter finish we offer is probably wood grain. You can choose any stain from a whole spectrum of tree woods, from light golden pine to rich red tones and chocolate-y dark stains. Many of these finishes can have a very natural, masculine feel, ideal for cabins and cozy great rooms. On the other hand, yellow wood can have bright, youthful feel, great for cheery kitchens and kids’ rooms. Earth Tones   Plantation shutters painted in earth tones such as solid browns, greens and blues turn any space into [...]

Signature Shutters Window Tinting

Before you decide to replace ALL the windows in your home because the ones you have let in heat and produce harsh glare, check out this affordable solution. Whether your windows have old, outdated glass or costly heat-trapping tendencies, a residential window tint treatment can help. Window tinting is an effective, affordable alternative to window replacement that makes even decades’ old glass like new. The thin, clear panes of years past could be costing you hundreds of extra dollars on your energy bills each month. That’s kind of like throwing money out the window! Tinted windows can save you tons of money in air-conditioning costs and the whole process costs far, far less than purchasing a whole new set of windows. Window tinting is easy to apply so the installation is safer than window replacement as well. No transporting heavy, sharp, highly fragile panes of glass required. Low-e (low emissivity) tints are a super energy efficient tinting option. Emissivity is the amount of heat entering and exiting your home. The more emissivity your home has, the more temperature fluctuation it has too. Low-e window tinting stops up to 99% of UV rays from entering your home. This can drastically decrease cool air loss, thereby slashing your monthly air conditioning bills while keeping you and your family comfortable. You’ll be shocked when you see how much you can save in spring and summer. Plus, with no UV radiation, you don’t need to worry about sun-bleached floors and furniture anymore. Tinting does more than reduce your electricity bills and help you avoid window replacement. It also reduces window glare. Another benefit of tinted windows is that they let in an ideal amount of natural light. Finally [...]

Child Safety Shutters

We call it “baby-proofing” but it’s important to keep your home safe for toddlers and small children too. Making our signature window treatments safer for homes with infants, young children and pets is a top priority at Signature Shutters. Children are innately curious about the world around them.  Even basic household items like window treatments can turn into potential hazards for them. If you’ve got a little one on the way or a new baby just starting to crawl and explore, drawers and cabinets shouldn’t be the only part of the home you’ve baby-proofed.  Windows and window treatments need special attention as well. Heavy blinds have a tendency to fall quickly when messed with, especially if they’ve been hastily installed. Shutters can pinch small hands. Plantation shutters and blinds may be finished in toxic primers, paints and stains. In addition to these manufacturing risks, it’s easy for kids to get tangled in the pull strings on blinds and shades. Small parts on the strings may pose an additional choking hazard. Making window fashions that are safe for homes with infants, young children and pets is one of our ongoing projects at Signature Shutters.  That’s how we developed a wide range of products to help reduce the risk of accidents. Our shutters and other products are made from VOC-free primers and use 100% made in the U.S.A. wood and paint. From cordless alternatives to motorized operation systems, we offer many innovative lifting systems designed with safety, convenience and beauty in mind. Choose from an abundant array of colors and materials that compliment your nursery today and your teen’s room tomorrow. Our children’s safety is of [...]

What to Look for in Plantation Shutters

At Signature Shutters, our favorite window treatment would have to be the plantation shutter. They are versatile, less expensive than custom drapes and they increase your home’s resale value. They are the only window treatment that can raise your home value, in fact, because they’re both permanent and highly desirable. Traditional shutters are not the same as plantation shutters. They have narrower louvers and are most commonly found around New England. Traditional shutters are rarely installed today because, unlike the plantation kind, they limit the light quite a bit and block the view. The Spanish first introduced shutters to the Americas. Large plantation homes in the South often used wide louvered shutters, giving plantation shutters their name. Today, plantation shutters are a popular choice around the country for kitchens especially. When shopping for interior shutters, it's important to know if you are buying custom shutters truly built for your windows or if the company will take stock panels and cut them down to fit. Often, the price is similar. A custom shutter company will measure your window exactly and build your shutters to fit while a cut-and-drill company may only provide shutters for rectangular windows. In addition to the overall shape of the shutters themselves, three custom features to think about when shutter shopping are louver width, divider rails and foldability. Louver Width Modern plantation shutters (particular custom ones) come in many different styles with many different louver sizes. The most popular louver width is about 2.5 inches but what size louver you choose is really a matter of personal preference. The 2.5-inch louver is more traditional and is a great choice for an average size rooms [...]

Know Your Shutter Types

A lot of people think the term “interior plantation shutters” refers to a specific type of window treatment… and it does. These consist of wooden frames with adjustable slats (aka louvers) that can be controlled with a pull bar. What these people don’t realize, however, is how much more specific things can get. There are a variety of window treatments that all fall into the broader category of plantation shutters. For example, three types of interior plantation shutters we carry are custom wood, hybrid and PolyWood. One of them is bound to be just your type! Custom Wood If we had to label any one of our products as our specialty, custom wood shutters would be that product. Because they’re custom, we can make shutter in virtually any style, any size and any shape.  If you have any oddly shaped windows like arches or triangles, a custom wood shutter may be just what you need. We have developed our wooden plantation shutters to maintain their beauty over time through superior material selection, construction and assembly. Our wooden shutters feature all solid wood construction and come with louver sizes that range from 1.75 to 4.5 inches. Wooden shutters can easily be painted or stained in finishes to match your samples. Hybrid   It seems like hybrids are all the rage these days. You’ve probably heard of hybrid cars and hybrid dogs but have you ever heard of hybrid shutters? They mix the classic look of a traditional wood shutter with more industrially advanced materials. A hybrid shutter is a shutter that’s part wood, part modern material. In terms of the mechanism itself, a hybrid shutter and a plantation shutter are identical. [...]
